Coca-Cola.... Americana Collectable in a Bottle

In 1912, Coca-Cola sold for pennies on the bottle. Today that same clear straight sided Script Coca-Cola bottle can be purchased as a classic disired item for about $ 150. That is more than three times the current value of one share of Coca-Cola. Thus, while it could have been more prudent in 1919 when the Coca Cola Company Released shares of common stock to have bought some of them, It could have been a smart to have maintained a six-pack of Coca-Cola hidden under my mattress for 87 years or less and sold today for over $900. In fact, even the special container of the bottle on its own would be noticed by a collector today!

What makes Coca-Cola bottles a high demand collector's item? Coca-Cola has not only played a role in many people's personal memories of childhood past, but has also been woven into the whole culture and American history. Works of art in Americas Golden Age of Illustration of famous artists Norman Rockwell and NC Wyeth was used for advertising. 1928 launched an unprecedented collaboration with the Olympic Games as soda with the Olympic team traveled to distant shores. In 1941 the U.S. entered the war and The Coca Cola Company responded by saying that any soldier anywhere in the world could get a Coke for 5 cents per bottle, no matter what it would cost the company to get there.

It is easy to recall the rosy-cheeked Santa Claus drinking a Coca-Cola, while delivering his treasures, or the tinkling of the bottles in their carriers,It's the Real Thing!or images of children of the world holding hands and singing i'd like to buy the world a Coke! or Speaking of the tumultuous times of the late 60's and early 70's s and their desire for sweeter time. In 1985 coca-cola even became the first beverage consumed in outer space. Almost it becomes unclear,if the memory is the moment,or if it is the coke which is the memory.  What is clear however is that Coca-Cola was there. And those are powerful partnerships to drive collectors.

It is not only the memory and history associated with bottles of Coca-Cola however, that encourages the collectors interest and desire. Special edition bottles have also been and still are, specifically created to mark the places and events in history. In limited quantities, the demand for these special collectible soda bottles and in particular single bottle carriers (most often quickly discarded by the consumer, once the drinks are safe at home) increases significantly collector value based simply on their limited numbers.

Commemorative editions, such as the bottle of 1984 LA Summer Olympics, or the six package of 2006 Academy Awards Diet Coke are also released only geographically, making it even more specialized and therefore valuable to collectors. Coca-Cola bottles tell a story of American culture and history in making something special out of the ordinary event. Coca-Cola drinkers do share over 100 years of thirst, memory cooling. It has been with us through personal events and the most important times in recent history. While writing this article I asked a group of friends,  Got Coke memories of your childhood?  Four faces immediately smiled and nodded toward me.  Maybe Coca-Cola's original owners Dr. John Stith Pemberton and his partner, Frank M. Robinson created something bigger than they realized, all those years, and it now looks they reall did capture time in a bottle!
