If you would enjoy fame as a wine expert, there is an easy way to acquire that reputation. Next time you are served a glass of wine, lift it by the stem (not the bowl!). Wave it under your nose with a circular motion. Smell the wine, and look thoughtful. Take a sip, cautiously. Then, find fault with it. This is the surefire way to have others regard you as a connoisseur Although it will get you by, you will only have qualified, thus far, as a wine snob.

If, on the other hand, you genuinely wish to cure your awe of unpronounceable wine labels, to hold your own in a wine discussion, to avoid being fleeced by nasty waiters, and to enjoy this delightful beverage without the risk of committing social disaster, take heart now. This article will help to unravel for most of the mystery that enshrouds the thousands of different liquids known as wine.

Not the lack of information, but too much-information that baffles and bewilders those who seek simple guidance to gustatory pleasure-is largely responsible for this mystery. Millions of words are written and spoken in praise and explanation of wine without an explanation of the explanations. Meanwhile the product itself becomes increasingly entangled in a maze of overlapping type names, geographical designations, vintages, and general mumbo jumbo so confusing that it is quite unintelligible to 99 out of 100 storekeepers and restaurateurs who sell the product.

The average American, who sometimes vaguely wonders what this or that bottle's contents might taste like, but who is not inclined to undertake lengthy investigations, usually just walks past the store shelf, or puts aside the restaurant's wine list, and buys beer, coke, or Bourbon instead.

Why does this hodgepodge continue to exist? Why don't wine labels tell in plain English what they mean? Who draws up those fearsome charts of vintage years and service temperatures, for what reason? Who decrees white wine with fish, red wine with red meat, long-stemmed glasses for Rhine, short ones for Burgundy? Why aren't the different kinds of wine given simple names, like those on the different kinds of canned soup, so that a novice can read the label and choose the vintage to serve with his skirt steak?

Much of wine's complexity can be blamed on its charm. Its romantic qualities, possessed by no other food or drink, receive so much attention that they tend to obscure its simple function as a beverage.

The homage paid to wine is richly deserved. As the blood of the grape, bestowed by Nature with the magic power to create happiness, it has sacred religious symbolism. Its beginnings are lost in antiquity; its ancient history is traced from the hieroglyphics of Egypt and Babylon, from the writings of Greek and Roman poets and from no less than one hundred and 65 references in the Bible.

Philosophers and physicians have sung wine's praises since the dawn of civilization, as an adjunct to life, health, and happiness. Modern gourmets and authors of cookbooks praise it as an inseparable companion of fine foods. Through all the ages of man it has been associated with feasting, philosophy, art, music, and love.

Little wonder that its advocates strive to preserve these intangible, romantic qualities. It is also understandable that wine's proud heritage of tradition, although a source of much puzzlement to the general public, still largely governs its production and nomenclature.

Helping to weave the web more thickly are wine's staunchest friends and admirers, the connoisseur cult of Great Britain and America, whose number grows with the sales of gourmet books and with the worldwide expansion of such organizations as the international Wine and Food Society. These worshipers of Bacchus regard red and white varietals in the way the philatelist, who never uses his specimens to mail his letters, regards the stamps he collects.

As they sip the object of their hobby (a kind of pleasure denied the stamp collectors), the wine fanciers discuss the optimum bottle age for Cabernet Sauvignon, the grievous error of serving brut Champagne with dessert, and fine distinctions between vintages-differences quite imperceptible to an average consumer and often also imperceptible (unless they peek at the labels) to the connoisseurs themselves.

What Miller Welding Helmets Offer

Making Your Relationship between You and Your Web Designer a Joyful Experience

Is it really possible to hire a web designer and manage to go all the way from the start of your website to the very end with out a moment of frustration and disappointment? I think it is! It is a matter of knowing how to explain your needs to your web designer and also allowing him to advice you what the best options are for you.

So let’s start by asking ourselves what a web designer needs from you;

1. It is good to start by informing your web designer of the business you are conducting. Giving him a brief description of what you do should be more than enough.
2. It will help if you provide your web designer with links to your competitors. Let him know what you like and dislike of your competitor’s website.
3.  Once you have shown your web designer links to your competitor’s websites, it will be a good idea to show him other links to websites you like. Let him know about your color preferences, layout and graphics you would like your website to have.
4. Provide your web designer with the content for your website in an organized manner. The best way to give your content to your web designer is in a word format or text format and you should actually use a word file per page in you future website. Let say that you have 3 pages; Home, about us, and our mission then you should have separated files for each page. In addition to that you should include a separated file called instructions. You will use this file to explain the web designer how to proceed with the content you have given him.
5. Give your web designer THE FREEDOM TO DESIGN! One of the major catastrophes in web design is when the client thinks he can design a website. Firs of all; web designers are not the same as graphic designers. There are many variables to consider when you design for the web. Designing a website is not the same as designing a paper flyer.
   Allow your web designer to design, he knows better than you. The one thing you can do is to let him know if you like what he is doing or not, and make suggestions but always listen to what he has to say. A good web designer will confront you and your ideas if you are going in the wrong direction.
6. There are several stages when designing a website; the first one is creating a mock up. Your web designer will create a sample template of your website to illustrate the layout, colors, and the position of all those objects that will make your website com alive.

   This first stage is crucial. You need to be very positive that you like the mock up before you give the ok to start designing your website. The reason is very simple; a mock up is nothing more than an illustration. What comes after that stage is the real deal; converting the template into a fully functional website. Trust me when I tell you that you do not want to tell your web designer to change the color of the back ground once you have approved the mock up. Your web designer will most probably get a tantrum and after that he will have to charge you an additional fee for extra labor.

7. One final issue which is major and contributes to the patience of a web designer is the grammar of your content. Web designers are not secretaries. A web designer will gather together all the information you have given him for your website and he will make this work on the web. If today you give your web designer the text that belongs to the about us page, but tomorrow you change your mind and you send him again new text for the about us page he will not be very happy.

I have been designing websites for a long time now and these are real facts that occur to me as well as to many web designers out there every day. You can have a web designer create a great website for you, but you need to know that everything that relates to the web takes a long time to accomplish so the more you help us the better your website will be designed.

Things You Never Guessed About Potted Whiskey

It would be appropriate for a people-based profile of whisky to begin by naming the first whisky maker. Sadly, no-one knows who he was. In fact, no-one knows who the first distiller was. It is clear that from AD 4 onwards, alchemists in China, India, Arabia, Egypt and Greece were using distillation to make turpentine, medicines, makeup (al-kohl, our alcohol) and perfumes, but there is no evidence that they adapted brewing techniques to make whisky.

How the Irish and Scots got in on the act is equally mysterious. The Celts may have known about distillation, but apart from a couple of enigmatic references in the 6th century AD there's no proof. What is agreed is that distillation arrived in Scotland with the monks of the Celtic Church, suggesting that distillation was already taking place in Ireland - perhaps Irish monks had encountered the art in Sicily or Andalucia, or through their ancient trading links with the Phoenicians.

By the time Friar John Cor bought his famous eight bolls of malt in 1495 - the first record of whisky making in Scotland -distillation was widely practised across Europe. It is hardly surprising that the first distillers were monks: the water of life, aquavitae (uisge beatha in Scots Gaelic) was a medicine made in monastic laboratories, and markedly different to today's whisky. Flavoured with heather, honey, roots, herbs and spices - partly to hide off-flavours, partly because it was a medicine -this medieval mix was closer to a crude whisky liqueur.

Until the beginning of the 19th century the top Irish brands were flavoured in this way. It was only when whisky began to be made in great houses and crofts alike that it became recognisable as the drink we know today. Distillers have always used the main crop of their region as the base for their spirits, and in Scotland and Ireland that meant barley. Making whisky was a means of using up surplus grain: in winter, cattle could be fed on the grains left after mashing and crofters could use their whisky as part-payment of rent. Made in batches in small pot stills, the process used for malt whisky today, whisky soon became an integral part of rural life.

When crofter-distillers from Scotland arc Ireland were driven off their land from 1 ~4; onwards, whisky spread to America and Canada. Though rye whiskey had been made as early as 1640, it was this sudden wave of immigrants that established whiskey as North America's spirit. They, too, used the local grains - rye, corn and wheat - and by 1783 commercial production had kicked or: in Kentucky.

By 1825, the whisky industry in Scotland and Ireland was controlled by men of capin. Gone were the days of the crofter-distiller making enough to fuel the craic and the ceilidh and pay the rent. New legislation ushered in a building programme of new malt distilleries across the Highlands and in Ireland. At the start of the 19th century Irish whiskey had the highest international reputation, with the heavily-peated Scottish malts considered an acquired taste. Then in 1827, Robert Stein invented a continuous still (see pages 86-87), which not only mace distilling less labour-intensive but produced lighter, grain-based whisky which could be mass produced. Adapted in 1831 by Aenea-Coffey, the continuous still changed whisky production forever.

Distillers in the Scottish Lowlands seized the new invention and by the 1850s grocer and wine merchants such as John Walker. George Ballantine, James Chivas, John Dewar and Matthew Gloag began blending malt with the light grain, and the public sa: up and took notice. The Irish resisted, for a time. Distillers including John Jameson and John Power, who were already enjoying international prestige with their pot-still whiskies, refused to use the continuous method, dismissing it as an adulteration o: 'real' whisky.

The North Americans had no such qualms and Coffey's patent still was soon adopted in America and Canada. This interest, along with James Crow's research into quality control in Kentucky, improved consistency. The Canadians were so enamoured of the Coffey still that, in 1875, they passed legislation decreeing that Canadian whisky could only be made from grain distilled in a continuous still, and aged for a minimum of three years in oak barrels. The quality-oriented, modern industry was taking shape. Even at this stage there was no indication that whisky would become the world's best-selling spirit. Brandy was still more popular, but the vine parasite phylloxera vastrix put paid to that when, from the 1870s onwards, it wiped out Europe's vineyards - and the brandy industry with them.

It is entirely possible that American whiskey would have become the world's dominant player, were it not for the growth of the Temperance Movement in the US which led to Prohibition in 1919. At that time, Irish whiskey was selling more in America than Scotch, but while Scotch and Canadian whisky managed to retain a quality image, Irish whiskies lost their biggest market overnight and were being (badly) copied by bootleggers. Their reputation plummeted. At the same time, Irish independence led to the ban of Irish products in Britain and the Empire. With no markets left, the Irish industry imploded and blended Scotch took over.

This was the situation until the late 1970s when, through industry complacency, or the inevitability of changing fashion, young drinkers turned away from brown spirits or the global whisky industry fell into deep depression. Blended Scotch has struggled hard to regain consumer confidence in its old markets, though it has enjoyed success in southern Europe and Asia. But in America, northern Europe and Britain, malts have kept the whisky dream alive. This recent fascination with premium whisky has also boosted the American whiskey industry and sparked a new optimism in Ireland and Canada. There are now more quality whiskies on offer than ever before, and a renewed interest in how they are made and the people who make them.

The Importance of Font-Style

When designing a logo or other material for your business, most people will probably know about the importance of factors such as colours, space, shapes and design. Sure, designing a logo is about all these things and a visually easily recognisesable logo is a must.

However, choosing the right font for your material is equally as important. In fact many incredibly successful products are almost synonymous with a certain kind of font. Think about Coca Cola's curved font or IBM's clear cut letters. Those fonts have become visually ingrained in peoples conception of the brand.

Choosing the right font type for your company logo is not just about recognisability, its also about choosing a font that communicates the right message to the general public. It has to do with congruently. If for example your business has to do with something solid and hands on like construction, most people would probably find it more than just a little curious if your company logo had elegant swinging letters!

Likewise if your business is about wedding arrangements, most couples about to get married would feel uncomfortable about doing business with a online printing company which uses large, sharp letters.

As such you can see how it is important to think about the font type you use in your promotional material, including your logo. Let us look in general at two different font types first:

Rounded edges or sharp edges?

Rounded edges on letters have a distinct relaxing and calm feeling. If you are selling something that provides pleasure of some sort such as entertainment, food, drinks etc., then rounded edges could be the right choice. Many producers of pre-packed foods and sweets use rounded edges for these reasons.

On the other hand, say you were an accounting firm, then rounded edges would probably not seem very trustworthy. Customers would more likely respond better to a basic, firm font, that communicates reliability, professionalism and truth. Think of IBM's rock solid font. Generally people have been found to associate rounded edges with creativity, relaxing and fun, while sharp edges have been associated with professionalism, seriousness and thrust.

Another thing to consider is to use a font that already is recognisesable. This doesn't mean having to copy another business font, but using the same basic font for your own business can give you instant recognisability. Some successful brands have used the same fonts in their logos for decades, simply because they work. Coca Cola have not change their fonts and neither have IBM.

By choosing a font that is similar to a successful product in the same niche there is an added value, because people will automatically connect that font to a successful product. This way you can save yourself a lot of hassle and testing by going with something that has already stood the test of time.

In a new construction, smoke detectors are to be powered by building wiring but equipped with backup battery. If there are additions or alterations (particularly sleeping rooms being added), the entire building shall have smoke detectors. In existing buildings, smoke detectors may be solely battery-operated.

Fire warning system (smoke alarms): Each dwelling must have smoke detectors in each sleeping room and the corridor to sleeping rooms, at each story (close proximity to stairways), and basement.
